The Definition of Sex Differences

Sex is the biological trait that determines the reproductive role of an individual, male or female, both in plants and animals which reproduce through sexual division. The classification of an organism into male or female determines its primary sex. The organs and tissues that are present in humans and other animals are capable of dividing to form sperm and these can become sperms for reproduction in later stages of life, either as an egg cell or as a spermatozoa. The ovum is the container for the developing sperm, while the cervical fluid transports the sperm through the uterus into the fallopian tube for fertilization with the ovum.

The existence of a human female or male and a non-human male, who have no definite sex characteristics is known as intersex. Intersex exists in human beings in the form of intersexed spermatozoa and also some of the characteristics of sexually identified males (both males and females) such as male breast development, male genitalia and the male uterus. Some people refer to intersex as referring to mosaics or genes that appear in a person’s DNA instead of having a characteristic set of chromosomes. Some people believe that the term intersex is used as an inclusive term to describe all cases of altered and confusing sex characteristics seen in the world today. Others believe that intersex refers to physical changes at birth caused due to some genetic mutations and are not gender neutral.

According to the biological aspects of sex, the social construction of sex determines whether the observed sex of a person is male or female. Sex is socially constructed through the way an individual experiences and values his or her own sexuality. This value system is influenced by the ability of an individual to distinguish between male and female and to select according to these two characteristics. In humans, a distinction is made between the biological aspects of sex and the social construction of sex, and this definition influences individuals’ feelings, behaviors and self-image.

In humans, there is a general tendency for the traits that are considered masculine to be passed on from the male species and the traits that are considered feminine to be passed on from the female species. Although intersex babies are conceived through in vitro fertilization with male sperm, they are still considered to be members of the x (female) species. Because intersex is not a viable option for a person because of the conception process, some choose to have their Y chromosome removed at conception so that the baby will be considered to be a strictly a (male) or purely a (female) sex. This distinction is not based on biology, but on perception.

There are some who believe that the word gender has negative connotations, and that it should not be necessary to differentiate between the two different classes of human beings. However, many people do not view this distinction consciously. If you were to ask someone if they considered the existence of intersex to be a normal part of evolution, they would probably answer in an affirmative manner. It is possible for intersex to occur as a result of sexual interaction between two completely different species of human beings. However, a person who believes that intersex is normal is simply practicing a narrow minded form of gender ideology, which denies the possibility that two different genders can exist in nature.

The issue of sexual differentiation will continue to play a prominent role throughout the coming years. Although we may never know exactly what the true biological and spiritual definition of gender is, we do know that there are several different definitions that are held by both science and religion. To understand the different definitions, it is important to explore all of the cultural implications of sex difference, especially when it comes to terminology.
