The Basics of Poker

In poker, the bluffing and misdirection spirit of the game are what make it so popular. But the game’s origins are a bit apocryphal. The earliest version of poker in Europe is probably the 17th century French game called poque. That game is the source of the English word, as well as its variation primero, which was brought to North America by French settlers. There is no definitive answer as to when poker came into existence, but it is likely to have originated in France.

The most basic form of poker involves betting with ante bets and blind bets. Then, players are dealt five cards, which they are supposed to keep secret from other players. When all players have seen all their cards, the first betting phase begins. Typically, this starts with the player to the left of the dealer, or with the blind bet. This process repeats itself until all of the players have betted. Once the blind bets are made, the next player to the left of the dealer is dealt a pair of face cards.

The game of poker is played with a deck of 52 cards, which are ranked from A (high) to J (low). In the case of a tie, the highest pair wins. However, if no two players have pairs or better hands, the high card wins. In the event of a draw, the pot is split between the remaining players. If there is no tie, the second pair wins. In the event of a tie, the high card wins.
