Online, from a broad technological perspective, refers to when a physical device is online and linked to other online devices, including a computer, another computer or even a device like a printer. Rather than having the address displayed publicly, such an address becomes invisible to others until such time as the user wants to make it visible.
Similarly, an online student might establish a “virtual classroom” where a group of virtual students can interact with each other through e-mail and other online applications, with the instructor, who may be located anywhere in the world, providing live instruction. With this type of setup, one student can monitor the instructor’s lectures and comments, as well as the discussions among the other online students. This allows for a real-time interchange of ideas and information, with each student taking part in the process and contributing to the overall learning experience. Of course, in this type of setup, the instructor’s lectures and discussions are of particular value and interest to the online students, because they were not present when the lectures were delivered.
