The term ‘gender’ was coined by biologists in the early nineteen-fifties and was first discussed in a 1993 article by the New York Academy of Sciences. The concept is a relatively recent one, though it has become increasingly popular over the past several years. It is an attempt to expand the view of gender, which has traditionally been considered a binary issue in the United States. However, many other cultures have long recognized the presence of third-gender people, and the idea of a gender spectrum has merit.
